This issue of LMD features a cover story by Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane on how corruption has become the unseen barrier that disallows economic benefits of the nation to reach those who are on the fringes of development. In order to reduce and eventually eliminate corruption from the nation we must prevent erroneous appointment of government officials and the state resources must be hands with care and honesty. Other than the exclusive on corruption this issue of LMD also explores the social unrest that accompanies income inequalities through the experience of certain New Zealanders. Amantha Perera laments the lethargy of mainstream media in using social media. Padma Rao Sundarji writes an article on her experience as a journalist in Sri Lanka and gives readers a glimpse of the delights and frustrations she encountered while on the island. CEPA's Mansi Kumarasiri higlights the problems that arise as a result of state resettlement of the poors from their makeshift wattes to high-rise buildings. She emphasises the importance of catering more specifically to the needs of the poor rather than blindly following the formula the Western world has used in the past.
