The research division of the Parliament of Sri Lanka published the annual research journal for the year 2013, focusing on the theme ‘People and Environment’. The journal explores the interdependency of people and the environment and the role of lawmakers, local government authorities and the general public in safe-guarding the environment. The journal includes contributions from individuals of the research division who have explored important topics such as water management in Sri Lanka, solutions for sustainable livelihood and diversification of the Accelerated Mahaweli Development project, climate change and environmental impacts and modern agriculture. The journal also talks about the problems the environment faces due to rapid urbanization and the increase in waste material. Many attempts have been made, rather unsuccessfully, to find a solution to the garbage problem. The Mahaweli project was an effort to reconstruct the rural economy thirty years ago and is now in need of renewed plans to meet the new challenges. The journal also reviews Karl Marx’s eco-philosophy as a solution to the environmental crisis.
This issue includes the following articles- Karl Marx’s eco-philosophy is the only solution to the environmental crisis, Waste management in Sri Lanka : effective approach, livelihood diversification in systems H of accelerated Mahaweli development project: solution towards sustainable livelihood , Climate change and human security, Reducing man,s footprint on earth, environmental impacts and modern agriculture.
