This research study is based on hospitals across South Asia, situated within the context of a wider work of the UNDP and its partners. It is intended both to feed into the a regional Human Development Report (HDR) on HIV and development and to create a mode of research partnerships that can be replicated and scaled up to measure and combat HIV-related stigma and discrimination on a wider scale and in a variety of settings. The research study is intended to develop indicators and indices to measure the levels of HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in hospitals across the region. As well as providing data for the HDR, this study has been an opportunity to design a new methodology that can quantitatively measure stigma and discrimination, thereby facilitating comparison between different institutions or countries and measurement of progress in reducing stigma and discrimination in the same institutions and countries, over time.
